Why I Love Recording Interviews
Interviews are one of my favorite types of jobs when working as a Production Sound Mixer. It is not about the ease of the job since I have done so many throughout the years. It is the concept that no matter how many I do, there will never be an interview that is identical to the last, and because of that it always makes the content being recorded new and fresh to listen to. It makes for an extremely enjoyable process.
Learn Different Hats
One of the most amazing things about working in production is the fact that we do not have a 9-5 type job where we have to work with the same people in the same building day in and day out repeatedly. We work with new people all the time and are always in a new location documenting amazing talent and projects around the word.
This type of gig gives you a unique perspective in life. I have recorded Engineers, Artists, Gurus, Healers, Attorneys, Generals, Presidents, and more. When I work as a sound mixer, the moment I hit record and the “technical” is done, it all comes down staying in the moment and listening as actively as possible to your talent. Listen to their story, the timbre and richness of their voice, listen to the dialogue and how the location sounds around. Listen for things that impede the sound of your interviewee. Just listen. Enjoy the stories and the free education from some of the masters of their trade. I cannot tell you how many things in life I would have never tried or discovered if it weren’t for a silly job and interview along on my journey.
I hope and wish to you the same excitement and experiences upon your journey recording sound. Never stop learning! Ever!
