Boom Right Masterclass
This Boom Operator Masterclass was filmed live in Los Angeles. Sponsored by K-Tek, and the help of LA Sound Mixers, Ken Strain demonstrates the basic skills needed to excel in the new age of long takes and many cameras that most sets have now. The course is designed to instill a base level of technique and understanding that can be the foundation for a successful and injury-free career.
You will learn how to carefully choose and adjust your equipment so that you can move with more freedom and comfort. Your equipment can be the difference between being able to boom a difficult shot, or having to sit it out and rely on wireless mics. In addition, some of the equipment shown will allow you to safely leave your microphone on set, and plant microphones with speed and ease.
Once we get the equipment sorted out, we show you how to hold and move with the boom so that minimum energy and maximum range of motion is achieved, as well as steadiness. Some of this information directly challenges what you see in popular YouTube videos by less experienced (but well-meaning) sound people. We go from broad technique to addressing subtler aspects of mic handling for dialogue that make a noticeable difference in quality. Lots of little tricks are shared here that would take years to discover on your own. It all comes down to listening and paying attention to what’s working and what isn’t.
As a boom operator, a huge part of your success depends on how you work with other people on the set. We show you how to approach the set with the right mindset, and set etiquette so that you start off on the right foot. Everything you need to level up is here. Integrate it, or innovate it!

A most have course for beginners and professionals alike!
Extremely helpful and a must-have course for both professionals and beginners alike. It doesn't matter what level you're at, Ken's insight covers it all, from mic placement to set etiquette. The next time I find myself stuck and flustered. I'll ask myself, "What would Ken do?"
Better than Youtube tip hunting!
I've heard a lot of things about this course and after finally purchasing and watching it, I think its safe to say that this course deserves its praise. Great information told in about 3 hrs. Youtube has great tutorials but finding the "same" quality of information you get with this course will take days and will still be subpar. Ken's personality makes this information easy to digest. To the point and practical with great on set stories to drive the point home. I bought this as a DP who occasionally is a boom op because it it severely lacking in my area.
Perfect for sound mixers and boom operators at any level!
I found this course extremely valuable. Before taking it as probably all of us, I explored most of the resources on the internet, including sound-oriented groups on FB and multiple YouTube videos. No doubt, some of the materials were helpful; however, it took me hundreds of hours to separate the wheat from the chaff if you understand what I mean. =) Even though, as you can tell, I did my homework, I learned from Ken a lot! In this few-hours length course, he very generously shares his techniques and tricks gained through decades in this profession. Ken gave us all the links to the equipment and tools he is using, including tapes, boom poles, mic holders, headphones, and even best shoes for boom operators based on over 27 years of experience in the field!!! In my opinion, this is a must-take course for anyone in the Sound Department on set!
Glad I learned this now
Im about to finish film school and I am glad I took this class and learned proper technique now so I won't hurt myself in the future. I wish I had learned this a few years ago. It is a straight forward and in depth class that taught me a lot.
Extremely valuable resource for beginners to experts
Ken is a gem to the sound community. When I heard he was going to be selling this class, I started pestering him to release it and was quick to give him my money as soon as soon as it was put on the market. Yay 1st customer! A natural teacher, he speaks with eloquence and wisdom you only gain thru years of experience. Even as an experienced boom operator, I found myself learning in this comfortably paced class. I do have one issue with it... it didn't go on another 10 hours. I must have watched this whole course at least 4 times and picked up new things every time and now that it's been a couple of months since my last viewing, it's probably time I watch it again.
